Christ Gospel Church

Our History

The story of Christ Gospel Church (CGC) began with a small prayer group in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, founded by the late Bishop Seth Akyea and a few Christian friends who shared a desire to grow in faith and fellowship.

Originally known as the Christian Prayer Group, members gathered regularly for prayer, Bible study, and fellowship in Bishop Akyea's apartment in the Rosemary Hills community of Silver Spring, Maryland. Among the early pioneers were Mr. Bobby Arthur Williams, Mrs. Mary Owusu, and the late Mrs. Rebecca Akuoko.

As the group continued to grow, meetings moved to the home of Mr. Abraham Inkoom in Wheaton, Maryland. Membership eventually reached approximately 50 people, laying the foundation for the group's formal establishment as a church in 1984. Sunday evening worship services were subsequently held at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C.

By September 1987, membership had grown to more than 150, and the church was officially incorporated in the District of Columbia. Soon afterward, Rev. Seth Akyea was ordained as pastor by Rev. Providence Minta Addo of New Hope Revival Church, and the congregation formally became known as Christ Gospel Church (CGC).

A Growing Church Community

As the congregation continued to expand, CGC eventually outgrew its meeting space at Northminster Presbyterian Church. In 1988, the church relocated to facilities within the Montgomery County Public Schools system in Maryland, beginning a new chapter in its growth.

Over the years, CGC worshiped at several locations throughout Montgomery County. In 2014, the congregation moved to Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, later worshiped at Northwood Presbyterian Church, and eventually established its current home at 2457 Linden Lane in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Throughout its history, Christ Gospel Church has experienced seasons of tremendous growth and accomplishment as well as moments of challenge and loss. Through each season, the church has remained grounded in faith, prayer, fellowship, and service.

In recent years, the CGC family has mourned the passing of several individuals who played significant roles in the life and history of the church, including its founder, Bishop Seth Akyea; Prophet Hamid Carew, who faithfully served with CGC for more than 13 years; and founding member Mrs. Rebecca Akuoko.

Their faith, leadership, service, and sacrifice remain an important part of the foundation upon which Christ Gospel Church continues to build.

From a small prayer gathering to a thriving church community, the story of Christ Gospel Church is a testimony to God's faithfulness across generations.
